Target: Gina McCarthy, Administrator, Environmental Protection Agency
Goal: Protect farm workers from exposure to harmful pesticides by imposing stricter regulations on their use
Over a billion pounds of hazardous pesticides are used in crop production annually in the United States. Our sources of food have become dangerous as they are covered in and treated with poisonous pesticides during production. These end up poisoning up to 20,000 farmers and workers per year.
The EPA is deciding whether or not the rules for protecting farm workers from pesticides will be reviewed and updated. Unfortunately, large corporate businesses that thrive on the sale and distribution of pesticides will push for them to remain in use. Many of the pesticides used cause cancer and other health issues.
Child workers are a huge concern as well as adults. There are approximately 500,000 child farm workers in the U.S. These young children are exposed to extremely harmful chemicals without being provided any type of protection. Many people end up suffering from respiratory problems and various other ailments due to these pesticides.
In offering more protection to farm workers, many of whom are young children, a few preventative steps can be taken. Workers should have access to protective equipment as well as safety trainings to inform them of the possible dangers of their job and how to avoid them. There should also be restrictions on who can enter a field that has been treated with pesticides. A minimum age restriction would protect children younger than sixteen from harmful pesticide exposure. Ask the EPA to protect farm workers from these dangerous pesticides.
Dear Ms. Gina McCarthy,
Please do not let your decision to protect the health of many young children, men, and women across the United States be swayed by large corporations. Their efforts to keep pesticide use as it are inconsiderate of the health and well being of people affected by pesticides. This is dangerous to all those involved in working on our farms to provide crops for consumers.
The use of toxic pesticides is unnecessary to begin with and to now be poisoning workers with the pesticides is unthinkable. The fact that these chemicals would be condoned by any organization is an embarrassment to the people of that organization and this country. Please speak up for the people suffering from the use of these hazardous chemicals and do not continue to poison hard working farmers.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
