Protect Captive Primates

Target: John Boehner, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives

Goal: Protect wild animals living in captivity as well as U.S. citizens

The Captive Primate Safety Act is intended to protect animals and citizens from possible dangers involving captive wildlife. Many times a year, young children, adults, and captive animals are hurt by animals acting out due to a life in captivity and often abuse.

One woman, Charla Nash, survived an almost fatal attack from a chimpanzee being kept as a pet. Nash has spoken out to Congress and is a supporter of the Act. According to Nash, incidents like the one she endured are preventable with proper precautions.

The primate trade and industry is a dangerous threat to the safety of primates and the public. Primates can be obtained rather easily, and it is concerning that restrictions are so loose in terms of who can gain access to the animals. They are obtained through Internet transactions as well as through dealers and auctions out-of-state. This lack of regulation requires federal legislation. The Captive Primate Safety Act will target trade and sale for private possession of primates. It will not affect primates held in zoos or wildlife sanctuaries or those held in universities.

Primates that are kept in captivity suffer terrible living conditions. They are often confined to tiny cages and at times have their teeth extracted, among other types of abuse. Sign the petition to call for support of the Captive Primate Safety Act so as to end animal abuse and animal violence against humans due to terrible living conditions.

Dear Ms. Mary Abrams,

Primate attacks and injuries are all too common and are easily preventable with the right measures in place. I urge you to support the Captive Primate Safety Act and enforce stricter regulations in terms of how primates can be obtained and who can posses a primate.

Protections will surely reduce the number of attacks on humans and avoid placing primates in the hands of people ill equipped or inexperienced to be handling them. Please help this act move forward to protect citizens and wild animals throughout the United States.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

I am disgusted that the U.S. actually allows primates to be kept as pets. I saw a horrific documentary about ‘my baby monkey’ whereby people ruthlessly breed a captive pair, usually caged & rip their baby off them to give to humans who want a baby…completely sick..
