Target: Gerry Hills, Founder of Arizonans for Gun Safety
Goal: Continue advocating for the end of gun tourism in Arizona and nationally
The United States dangerously increases its rates of tourism through promotion of guns. The tourist trend has led to the death of a firearms instructor by a nine-year-old girl firing an uzi, a type of submachine gun. The recoil caused the young girl to lose control of the gun and shoot her instructor in the head. Although the incident sparked debate over whether or not children should be able to handle guns, such as an uzi, it is important to note that at any age someone can lose control of a gun and misfire.
With guns becoming more expensive and more restricted even in the United States, the hype around guns is building. Despite gun laws tightening for those outside the United States, indoor shooting ranges in the United States have been gaining power. Tourists from across the world are drawn to the United States because of its gun culture. Whether it be in Las Vegas to literally have a shotgun wedding or in Hawaii to have a shot or two at a bachelor party, people want to enjoy the right to bear arms for their stay in the states. In fact, 90 percent of gun tourists are from outside of the country.
Proponents of the gun tourist trade view it as a novel experience that allows people to experience what they see in the movies. However, in attempting to provide an unforgettable experience for their guests, the use of guns can scar people for life with deadly accidents and fatal injuries. Some proponents blame the instructor for permitting the girl to use the gun. Nevertheless, it is the responsibility of everyone to make safety a priority over profit and prohibit the use of weapons for recreation.
The incident with the shooting instructor is not an isolated incident. Similar situations have occurred in which children or even adults accidentally shot themselves. Please demand an end to gun tourism in the United States.
Dear Mr. Hills,
Thank you for speaking out against gun tourism. No one should be shot down dead when trying to have fun. No one, a child especially, should fall victim to a life full of guilt over killing someone either. Ultimately, safety should override the money that gun tourism generates.
Please continue to advocate for the elimination of gun tourism in your home state as well as in the United States.
