Target: Alecia A. DeCoudreaux, President of Mills College
Goal: Applaud efforts to welcome transgender students and acknowledge trans rights
Mills College, a historic women’s institution, is the first single-sex college in the United States to espouse a policy that explicitly welcomes transgender students. The new policy now extends an invitation to trans students, making it the only school out of the United States’ 119 single-sex institutions to have such a code.
According to the vice president of enrollment and admissions at Mills College, almost five percent of the school’s 1,000 undergraduate students identifies as something other than their assigned birth sex. To make sure future applicants feel welcome, the policy was designed to help students become comfortable about the college’s stance on transgender recognition and demystify the application process.
The college’s landmark move towards supporting transgender rights makes it okay for applicants who are not assigned to the female sex at birth, but who self-identify as women, to apply. Also, applicants who transpose the gender binary, being neither female nor male, are also eligible to apply, only if thy were assigned the female sex at birth. Further, students who make the transition from male to female are welcome to apply to the college’s graduate program, which is coeducational. And, any female students who transition may still graduate from the college.
The policy proves to be a monumental one as pressure continues to mount against other single-gender schools, most notably Smith College, with discriminatory trans-exclusionary admissions policies. As the fight for LGBT rights ensues, Mills’ new outlook on transgender rights and education deserves to be lauded.

Dear Alecia A. DeCoudreaux,
It has recently come to my attention that Mills College will be considering transgender students for its highly competitive admissions process. As many other single-sex institutions continue to uphold trans-exclusionary admissions policies, your educational code sees potential and promise in these students. And, for that, your efforts deserve to be applauded.
To be the first college, out the other 119 same-sex institutions, with such a policy proves that LGBT advocacy has not been in vain. Gay, lesbian, bisexual and, especially transgender people, have been denied the right to attend many educational institutions based on outdated stratagems and outright discriminatory practices. Thank you for being so proactive and passionate about the fight for trans rights.
