Goal: Thank musician for raising awareness to animal testing in medical experiments
Vegetarian musician and producer Grimes has publicly declined participating in the Ice Bucket Challenge, citing the California drought and the ALS Association’s use of animal testing as her reasons for forgoing the challenge. Please take a moment to thank her for bravely standing up for the rights of animals.
After being challenged by DJ Ritchie Hawtin, Grimes posted her humane response on Tumblr. “Haha okay, richie is probably the nicest and coolest person I’ve ever met so i can’t really refuse him,” she said. “However, I would like to say that I don’t feel great about wasting water in this california drought, but i will donate money. However I will not donate money to this foundation because of their record of testing on animals, but I will donate money to the Malala fund because education is the key to ending almost every issue that faces humanity and our world today. yep yep!”
Grimes, born Claire Elise Boucher, has become a powerhouse in the music scene. In the last five years, she has released three albums, signed to Jay-Z’s management company Roc Nation and directed several of her own music videos including “Oblivion” and “Genesis.” In 2013, she even won the Webby Award for Artist of the Year and the Juno Award for Electronic Album of the year.
This isn’t the first time that Grimes has stood out from the masses, speaking out against everything from sexism to glamorizing drug use. In another Tumblr post from 2013, she wrote about the many ways that females are objectified in the music industry. “I’m tired of men who aren’t professional or even accomplished musicians continually offering to ‘help me out’ (without being asked), as if i did this by accident and i’m gonna flounder without them. or as if the fact that I’m a woman makes me incapable of using technology. I have never seen this kind of thing happen to any of my male peers.”
The Ice Bucket Challenge has become a viral phenomenon that has successfully raised awareness and millions of dollars for the ALS Association. While it is important to find a cure for this debilitating disease, it is also important to treat animals with kindness and compassion. Please thank Grimes for respectfully raising the issue of animal testing in association with this global campaign.
I was pleased that you had declined the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, citing environmental and animal rights issues as your reasons. By taking this opportunity to speak out against animal testing, you are helping to speak up for countless voiceless animals who are subjected to cruel medical testing.
Thank you for using your celebrity to be a champion for animals and the environment.
