Target: Daniel Ortega, President of Nicaragua
Goal: Stop the trans-oceanic canal projects in Nicaragua from destroying the homes of many property owners
Property owners living in the Brito river region of southwest Nicaragua are at a great risk of losing their homes as HKND, a China based group, begins to survey the properties in preparation for the trans-oceanic canal. This project has caused much concern among property owners in the region as teams of accessors, who are accompanied by soldiers and police, come to survey the area. The level of intimidation the property owners are experiencing is alarming. They should not be terrorized out of their homes.
Many of the property owners are worried about receiving unfair compensation after they lose their homes. Since the tax value of the land in the region is very low, even if the home owners are paid the real market price, they may still have trouble buying replacement homes after their homes are destroyed to make way for the canal.
The government has announced the route where the canal is planned to be built and many home owners along that route are becoming increasingly worried after they were told they would only have one month to leave after the negotiations begin. This trans-oceanic canal project, however necessary, should at least offer home owners sufficient funds to buy a replacement home after they are forced out of their current homes. Sign this petition and demand adequate compensation for property owners who are at risk of losing their homes due to the construction of the trans-oceanic canal project.
Dear Governor Daniel Ortega,
It has come to my attention that many people living in the Brito river region of southwest Nicaragua are at great risk of losing their homes due to the trans-oceanic canal. I have become very concerned for the future of these home owners now that I have learned they might receive unfair compensation for their property. After being intimidated and forced to surrender their homes to the construction of the trans-oceanic canal, these people should at least be given proper compensation.
Since the tax value of the land in the region is very low, many of the property owners probably won’t be able to buy replacement homes even if they are paid the real market price for their current homes. I understand that the construction of this canal is necessary, however, I still believe the home owners of this region should be given the sufficient funds to buy a replacement home after they lose their homes to the construction of this canal.
