Target: Laurie Lang, Executive Director of Project Angel Food
Goal: Applaud charity for providing nutritious meals to those in need for 25 years
For 25 years, volunteers have been serving meals to those with debilitating diseases such as HIV/AIDS, renal failure and cancer. The nourishment these volunteers provide is good for the body as well as the morale of those they serve. Thank the organization and its volunteers for devoting their time and energy to help improve the everyday lives of individuals suffering from terminal illnesses by providing them with a healthy, delicious meal.
Founded in 1989, Project Angel Food was established in Los Angeles County to assist those unable to shop or prepare food for themselves due to their life threatening illnesses. Sometimes treated as outcasts of society—such as AIDS patients have been—these recipients often could not shop or cook for themselves, bringing on malnutrition which only amplified the detrimental diseases ravaging their bodies. Working with the on-staff registered dieticians, Project Angel Food tailors menus to meet each individual’s needs, dependent upon their prognosis.
Over nine million meals have been cooked and delivered to those in need, free of charge, over the past 25 years, with roughly 500,000 meals being served each year. This is due in large part to the more than 3,600 volunteers and donors, making it possible for 2,100 seriously ill people to receive the nutrition they need every week. Donations have also been received from celebrities such as Barbara Streisand, David Geffen, Leonard Nimoy and Elizabeth Taylor, listed on its Board of Directors in memoriam.
Often the delivery of food has also been a delivery of friendship and social interaction for the homebound. There is a strong connection between the members of Project Angel Food and the community they serve. They will continue their voluntary mission of feeding the stomachs and spirits of the sick of Los Angeles County. Please sign the petition below to express gratitude for their selfless dedication to those in need.
