Target: United States Senator John McCain
Goal: Get the senator to continue work on comprehensive immigration reform
It becomes much more difficult to create quality legislation when the very people involved in its writing keep backing away from their own work. United States Senator John McCain, who has worked on a comprehensive immigration reform bill with other senators since 2013, recently took steps away from the effort. According to Talking Points Memo, Senator McCain said that “[w]e need to assure the American people that the border is secure” before any other work can take place on immigration reform. This way of thinking is problematic, as the existing reform bill is intended to be a compromise between liberals, who are usually more focused on creating a simple path to citizenship, and conservatives, who value working to decrease undocumented immigration. Senator McCain now appears to want to achieve one half of the compromise before the other instead of working towards both goals simultaneously.
Although much of the media would lead many to believe otherwise, the situation at the US-Mexico border is not dire – the border is more secure now than it has been in decades. To make matters even worse for Senator McCain’s argument, the immigration reform bill he is distancing himself from would mandate a huge increase in border security, doubling the number of border control agents and building miles of fences. The best way for Senator McCain to “assure the American people that the border is secure” is to work on and pass the existing reform bill. Making it easier to become a U.S. citizen would actually help decrease undocumented immigration, as fewer people would be forced to enter the country without documentation.
Senator McCain is a powerful and important part of the immigration reform process, and he should return to work. Such an important piece of legislation doesn’t deserve to be abandoned. By signing this petition you will urge the senator to continue to strive towards a better immigration system.
Dear Senator McCain,
It is unfortunate that you have recently stepped down from supporting the comprehensive immigration reform now working through the Senate, and I strongly encourage you to rethink your new position. Though your support for a strong and secure border is admirable, you can best achieve this goal by working to pass the legislation you now seem to oppose. The reform bill would mandate a huge increase in border security; your goals, and the goals of many other citizens of the U.S. would be met.
There is no reason to back away from comprehensive immigration reform now. Your input and leadership are important to its success. I urge you to return to work on the bill.
