Target: “Saving Mr. Banks” actress Emma Thompson
Goal: Thank Emma Thompson for urging people to take personal action to combat global warming
Earlier this month, Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson took time out to take a trip to the Arctic with Greenpeace. While on this educational journey, Thompson shared insight into what everyday people can do to make positive changes in their own lives to protect the Arctic.
She first addressed what actions the government should take to counter global warming saying, “The changes we need, that the Arctic needs, must come from the top as well as the bottom. We need electric cars to be cheaper and more accessible. We want safer bike lanes in every big city. We want plastic bags to be banned for good. We need governments to stand up to the dirty industries that have for so long funded and controlled them, and to give us all an affordable chance to live our lives in a more sustainable way.”
Later in her speech, Thompson empowered citizens to take action into their own hands. “Keep recycling; keep using your own shopping bags, taking transit and using your bike. But also use your voice,” she said. “Know that you have power and you can make your government listen. Above all, I hope that people stop feeling so guilty and powerless about climate change. That’s the lie that keeps us paralyzed when really together, we are so much more powerful.”
Thompson joined Greenpeace in conjunction with its campaign to ban drilling in the Arctic and to create a protected sanctuary in the waters around the North Pole. Thompson also encouraged people to attend a large climate march, which is scheduled to take place in New York this September.
By speaking out against global warming, Emma Thompson is keeping the topic of the Arctic in the headlines, thanks to her celebrity. She is also encouraging her fans all over the world to take small steps that add up to big changes in the fight against global warming. Please take a moment to thank her for being a champion for the environment.
