Target: U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner
Goal: Protect human health and the environment from the dangerous practice of mountaintop removal coal mining
A growing body of evidence is consistently showing the horrible side effects of mountaintop removal coal mining. Recent studies have shown that people living nearby mountaintop removal sites are at serious risk for a plethora of health issues. A bill has recently been introduced in Congress that would protect these people by placing a moratorium on mountaintop coal mining in Appalachia until the people are guaranteed that there will be no harmful side effects.
Studies show that people in towns near mountaintop removal coal mines have higher levels than normal of many types of birth defects, including musculoskeletal, respiratory, circulatory, central nervous system, and gastrointestinal defects. Babies born from mothers infected with toxins from mountaintop removal are twice as likely to have birth defects than babies whose mothers smoked cigarettes regularly while pregnant.
Other studies have shown that the water near mountaintop removal sites contains high levels of chemicals from the mining process. Humans also ingest these toxins from fish who ingest the chemicals from contaminated water. High levels of airborne hazardous dust are also very common around mountaintop removal mines. A study stated that “human health impacts may come from exposure to streams or airborne toxins and dust.” The study shows that in these areas the rates of hypertension, lung cancer, chronic pulmonary, heart, and kidney disease, and mortality are significantly higher than other places and are still on the rise. The report says, “Health problems are for women and men, so effects are not simply a result of direct occupational exposure of predominantly male coal miners.”
The Appalachian Communities Health Emergency Act will place a moratorium on mountaintop removal coal mining in Appalachia until the people are guaranteed that their health will not suffer from the greed of the coal industry. Please tell Congress to support and pass this bill.
Dear Speaker Boehner ,
Mountaintop removal coal mining has been proven to be incredibly dangerous and toxic to both people and the environment. Studies have shown that a myriad of health issues are caused by toxins from mountaintop removal coal mining.
Studies demonstrate that in areas near to mountaintop removal sites the rates of hypertension, lung cancer, chronic pulmonary, heart, and kidney disease, and mortality are significantly higher than other places, and these rates are still on the rise. Birth defects are also much more common in these areas. These defects have been found in the categories of musculoskeletal, circulatory, central nervous system, respiratory, and gastrointestinal.
Mountaintop removal contaminates the air we breathe and the water we drink with hazardous chemicals that we ingest, causing hugely detrimental effects to our health. Please support the Appalachian Communities Health Emergency Act and protect people and the environment from the horrible dangers of mountaintop removal coal mining.
