Stop Harming Hedgehogs

European Hedgehog Mother and Child

Target: Royal Mail Group Ltd. CEO Moya Greene

Goal: Stop Royal Mail postmen from dropping rubber bands that cause harm to hedgehogs

Royal Mail Group Ltd. is a Universal Postal Service Provider founded in the UK. When postmen deliver mail to homes, they discard the rubber band around the mail on the ground. Hedgehogs then become tangled around the bands that dig deep into their organs as they grow and cause infections that ultimately result in amputation to save their lives. If the infection is too severe, then it is often fatal. In some cases, the band has dug so deeply into the hedgehog’s rib bones it has cut into its lungs. Sadly, many hedgehogs and other wildlife are killed each year due to these carelessly discarded rubber bands.

The charity Keep Britain Tidy has criticized Royal Mail postal managers and demanded them to cut down on their use of the bands, which are not only killing wildlife but also littering the streets of Britain. The items were found on at least eight percent of the streets surveyed by the charity, and in 2009, citizens had collected more than 13,000 of the bands from front gardens and pavements. Two million of these bands are used each day and many end up as litter on the ground. Fiona Ashurst, a member of the Keep Britain Tidy charity, stated, “By pocketing the rubber bands to use again, not only will this help to keep our streets clean, it will save the Royal Mail money as well.”

Please sign this petition to urge Royal Mail Group Ltd. to get rid of the rubber bands and find an alternative to keeping mail organized for delivery.

Dear Moya Greene,

Please stop producing the rubber bands that tie your mail together. The bands are a large source of litter to communities and are a threat to wildlife. If this cannot be done, your postmen should at the very least discard the bands properly in the trash to protect hedgehogs from becoming tangled in the bands. They could also be obligated to return the bands so they can be reused. It is important to educate your employees to stop littering for the sake of the animals and your community.

I urge you to consider the alternatives to keep the community clean and to protect wildlife.
