Target: Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir, President of Sudan
Goal: Release an innocent prisoner of conscience and ensure that he has access to the medical care he requires
Ibrahim El Sheikh, Chairman of the Sudanese Congress Party, was recently arrested and imprisoned for “incitement and acting against the constitutional regime,” Amnesty International reports. His health is deteriorating and he faces the death penalty simply for peacefully expressing his opposing political views. Sign the petition and urge authorities in Sudan to free Ibrahim El Sheikh and get him the medical attention he so desperately requires.
El Sheikh was arrested following his participation in a public demonstration, during which he condemned attacks against civilians by “a militia aligned with the government,” Amnesty reports. He faces six separate charges, one of which subjects him to the possibility of capital punishment.
To make matters worse, El Sheikh suffers from an intestinal issue that causes bleeding. His condition has only worsened since his detention, eventually reaching a point where the doctors at Khartoum Police Hospital recommended surgery. El Sheikh was reportedly hesitant to undergo surgery, which the security forces took as a refusal of medical care. He was subsequently moved back to another prison, still without having undergone treatment.
Ibrahim El Sheikh needs medical attention, and what’s more, he needs his freedom. He faces the ultimate punishment simply for the peaceful expression of his political beliefs. Do not let him suffer in silence. Sign the petition and demand that Sudan release Ibrahim El Sheikh, ensure he receives the proper medical attention, and work to abolish the death penalty altogether.
I am writing to urge you to reconsider the charges against Ibrahim El Sheikh, Chairman of the Sudanese Congress Party, who has been arrested and imprisoned simply for using his right to peaceful expression. Of the six charges he faces, one carries the potential for the death penalty. There is no just reason to execute a man simply for the peaceful expression of his political beliefs, however unpopular they may be with those in power. I urge you to right a grievous wrong by releasing El Sheikh immediately and working to abolish the death penalty in Sudan.
In addition to the flimsiness of the charges against him, El Sheikh has faced further struggles since his detention: his preexisting intestinal condition has worsened to the point where doctors at Khartoum Police Hospital recommended surgery. However, he was transferred back to prison without receiving any medical care for his serious condition.
Ibrahim El Sheikh has been wronged too many times by the justice system in Sudan, and the time has come to end the injustice. I urge you to ensure that El Sheikh has access to the medial care he requires. I demand that he be released immediately, and I encourage Sudan to do away with the death penalty in favor of more humane alternatives.
