Applaud Foundation for Ending Support for Anti-Consumer Organization

Target: Chief Executive Officer Sue Desmond-Hellmann

Goal: Thank the Bill and Melinda Foundation for ceasing to support anti-consumer interests

Those in favor of for-profit prisons, “stand your ground” laws and low minimum wages have lost an important source of funding. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has ended support for the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), an organization that works closely with corporations and similar interests to make corporate ideas and goals into law. While simply aligning oneself with corporate interests isn’t inherently a bad thing, ALEC has been involved in many projects that put the average person decidedly last. Along with prisons, guns and low wages, ALEC has concerned itself with defeating environmental protections, hiding inhumane conditions at slaughterhouses, and pushing for the drug-testing of welfare recipients.

ALEC requires a great deal of money to make its voice heard and to ensure that it can work with corporate interests to influence government, and in recent times that funding has begun to dry up. An aggressive campaign to convince companies and organizations to cut ties with ALEC has paid off; according to SourceWatch, 91 private-sector groups had left ALEC’s membership as of January 2014. Now that number is joined by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. As an organization that works towards global health and development, it made little sense for the Foundation to be involved with a group such as ALEC in the first place. Hopefully this example will convince yet more organizations to think twice about contributing to ALEC’s causes.

The Chief Executive Director of the Foundation, Sue Desmond-Hellmann, is deserving of high praise. Now that the Foundation’s money can no longer be used by ALEC, the pro-corporate organization will have a more difficult time pushing its dangerous agenda. By signing this petition, you will thank Ms. Desmond-Hellmann for doing the right thing for consumers.

Dear CEO Desmond-Hellmann,

The recent news that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will no longer financially support the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is welcome indeed. ALEC is an organization seemingly dedicated to supporting corporate interests at the expense of everything and everyone else. By leaving its membership, you have not only deprived ALEC of funds necessary to its mission, but set a good example for other organizations.

Now that it no longer supports ALEC, the Foundation can turn its attention to other, more worthy causes. Thank you for siding with consumers.

  1. ALEC is largely funded by the despicable Koch brothers. They still have plenty of money.
