Target: Harnett County District Attorney Vernon Stewart
Goal: Charge horrifically abusive poultry farm with animal cruelty for burying birds alive
An undercover investigation of a North Carolina chicken factory farm called Prince Poultry found hundreds of thousands of birds suffering under horrifying acts of abuse. An undercover investigator involved with Compassion Over Killing, a national animal protection group, shot a video to document the abuse, which caught workers dumping unwanted, live birds into mass graves where they were left to die slowly and painfully from starvation, illnesses, and weather conditions. Many birds were harshly thrown around and forcefully stuffed into buckets with already deceased birds. In the video, one worker is heard laughing and commenting that the mass grave is like “gravy that’s simmering and squirming.” Another worker admitted that Prince Poultry workers do not humanely euthanize the unwanted birds before burying them.
Shockingly, none of the workers caught in the video have been charged with animal cruelty. After hearing about the horrifying abuse, Pilgrim’s Corp, an international corporate that takes supplies from Prince Poultry, has cut business ties with Prince Poultry. However, Harnett County District Attorney Vernon Stewart has decided not to press criminal charges and refuses to expand upon the decision. Stewart’s lack of action is at odds with North Carolina’s animal cruelty law, which states that a person who intentionally injures, tortures, or neglects an animal is guilty of animal cruelty.
Please sign this petition to demand Harnett County District Attorney to enforce the state’s laws and enact severe punishment upon Prince Poultry.
Dear Vernon Stewart,
Prince Poultry is a disgusting factory farm that should be shut down due to its blatant acts of animal cruelty. It is appalling to me that you would ignore a crime that is obviously in violation of North Carolina law and has been clearly documented on videotape. The law states that any person who neglects, torments, or injures an animal will be charged with animal cruelty, so why is Prince Poultry an exception? Birds are being tortured on a daily basis, living in terrible conditions, and apparently their pain is a source of amusement to at least one of the farm’s workers. You must take Compassion Over Killing’s video as evidence to prosecute the people responsible for this crime immediately. Do not let this farm get away with their actions.
I urge you to do your duty and uphold the state’s laws.
