Target: Governor of Ohio John Kasich
Goal: Stop factory farming to protect water
Factory farming involves keeping animals such as pigs and cows in tight, cramped places to maximize production levels. These farms are called CAFOs, short for concentrated animal feeding operations, and are known for mistreating animals while keeping them in filthy conditions. Animal lovers have long since protested CAFOs and have lobbied for more ethical and sanitary solutions. Now there is another reason to abandon CAFOs completely, and that has to do with keeping our waters drinkable. The waste produced from these operations are contaminating our waterways and the state of Ohio needs to shut down factory farming so citizens can continue to have clean drinking water.
CAFOs produce a massive amount of waste which are stored in lagoons near the site of the operation. The waste water is not treated and if they get flooded, the runoff can contaminate waterways and the soil. It releases toxic organisms and nutrients into both the wild and urban environments. These nutrients feed algae and other plant life and as they blossom with life, they choke out other organisms in a waterway. With the case of Toledo, Ohio, whose citizens were ordered not to drink their tap water for several days, toxic algae had blossomed and contaminated their drinking water. The incident has now forced the Ohio Agriculture Advisory Council to change industrial practices in the state to ensure that this incident never occurs again.
Factory farms are unethical and unsanitary. These animals are placed in cramped, noisy, and filthy conditions, where they never feel the grass underneath their feet. Instead of eating grass, many of these animals are fed corn, which is not a part of their natural diet. Factory farms have not just become an animal welfare issue, but a safety issue as well. Demand the governor to close down factory farms in Ohio, and pursue ventures that are ethical and sanitary for our animals.
Dear Governor John Kasich,
The incident in Toledo, Ohio was sparked when lagoons holding waste water in CAFOs were flooded and contaminated the waterways of the city. It left the water undrinkable and citizens were forced to buy bottled water. The culprit were factory farms, whose unethical and unsanitary ways placed humans in danger.
I urge you to immediately close these CAFOs as our animals and humans deserve better. Animals shouldn’t be treated like a produce or an item, they are capable of feeling emotions. These operations now pose a danger to our health. Instead of rewriting the regulations, I urge you to close all factory farms and pursue a venture that will give dignity to our animals.
