Target: Jamie Oliver
Goal: Support a famous chef’s efforts to stop foods contaminated with hormones and pesticides from entering the United Kingdom
The United States is overrun with foods containing hormones and pesticides. Jamie Oliver, a famous British chef, seeks to stop those products from invading his home by involving himself in the European Union’s and the United States’ affairs. An agreement called the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between the European Union and the United States calls for no trading barriers between states, providing loopholes for hormones and pesticides in food, particularly in meat. Oliver argues that the new agreement will set back years of progress that the European Union has made in removing harmful, cancer-causing substances in food. The kind of restrictions that the European Union has implemented do not operate in the United States. The United States’ food companies seek to override the restrictions in the European United to increase their profit.
Oliver sees the same food problems that afflict the United States arising in the United Kingdom, from poor quality of public health to strained relationships between the government and farmers. Oliver has reached out to the United States’ government leaders, specifically former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He has also targeted certain hormones, such as ractopamine for pigs and BST for milk, and the use of arsenic on chicken, pesticides on fruits and vegetables, and poultry rinsed with chemicals. The Center for Food and Safety, a lobby group in the United States, supports Oliver’s stance, stating that they are concerned over the secrecy of food corporations.
In the past, Oliver has advocated successfully for better school lunches in the United Kingdom, so please praise his dedication to healthy food standards and support him in this new fight.
Dear Mr. Oliver,
Thank you for your work to remove harmful growth hormones and pesticides from food in the United Kingdom. Your intervention in the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) is admirable, and you are brave to take on two powerhouse governmental bodies. People’s well being should be the primary concern for the world’s leaders. From hormones in meat to pesticides in produce, the manipulation of food must stop.
Once again, I appreciate your fight for better food in the United Kingdom. Please also bring attention to the broken food industry in the United States.
