Target: Sanchaita Gajapathi Raju, founder of Social Awareness Newer Alternatives
Goal: Applaud efforts to spread sanitation and clean water technology across rural India
It might surprise you to learn that almost 60 percent of India’s population of over a billion people have no access to sanitation facilities and are forced to defecate in public. Especially in rural areas, the lack of sanitation services and clean water dehumanizes locals and cripples them financially. Having no access to clean drinking water and sanitation facilities results in increased exposure to illness, and therefore in loss of pay and heightened medical expense burdens. Sanchaita Gajapathi Raju, inspired by the efforts of her mother (who was a Member of Parliament) and father to improve the plight of rural women and children, quit her corporate job and founded a non-governmental organization (NGO) in 2011 to bring clean water and sanitation services to disadvantaged Indians in rural Andhra Pradesh and Delhi.
The NGO, called Social Awareness Newer Alternative (SANA), recognizes that access to water can change everything, by empowering residents, restoring their human dignity, and improving their health. SANA started by providing villages in Andhra Pradesh with integrated solar water purifying stations and bio-digester toilets. By now these stations have produced over two million liters of clean water, and their byproducts of gas and water can be used for electricity and irrigation. SANA sets up the stations and bestows the skills needed to maintain them upon the villagers, providing marginalized locals with different employment options that allow them to help lift up their own communities. At this point ten villages are now equipped with their own sanitation and water purification facilities.
By signing this petition, you are thanking Sanchaita Gajapathi Raju and all the compassionate workers at SANA for their work in ensuring that Indian citizens have access to water, the most basic human right. You are encouraging them to continue providing clean water and sanitation facilities to more of the disadvantaged members of Indian society.
Dear Sanchaita Gajapathi Raju,
The achievements of yourself and your organization SANA over the last few years are astounding and heartening. Bringing attention to an issue that is not only central to the survival of many disadvantaged mothers and children in rural India, but also to the survival and sustainability of our world, is highly admirable. You have already begun to accomplish your mission of restoring dignity and health to the citizens of rural Andhra Pradesh and Delhi, and I hope you will continue to pursue an even wider goal as SANA’s success keeps growing.
Thank you for working tirelessly on behalf of lower-caste citizens and those living in rural areas without access to clean water and sanitation. Thank you for being a vocal and compassionate advocate for those whose plight is barely known around the world. Thanks to your efforts, many more global citizens are becoming aware of the suffering of marginalized people in India and around the world.
