Demand Major Grocer Stop Selling Rabbit Meat

Target: John Mackey, co-CEO of Whole Foods Market

Goal: Remove rabbit meat from all retail shelves of every Whole Foods Market indefinitely

Recently, rabbit lovers have been up-in-arms over Whole Foods Market’s decision to sell rabbit meat in some of its locations. The major health-food corporation created animal welfare standards for rabbits in particular, in order to sell the meat to consumers; though, no matter how “humane” the company is about raising and slaughtering rabbits, many people view rabbits as pets. Instead of adapting welfare standards to include more animals intended for consumption, Whole Foods Market should be moving away from selling meat entirely.

In response to the intense backlash that Whole Foods Market has encountered after selling rabbit, the company’s spokeswoman released a statement claiming that welfare standards for its rabbits are top notch. Whole Foods Market developed its industry-leading strict guidelines over four years, paying close attention to how the animals are fed, bred and housed. The company claims that it had been asked by consumers to start selling the meat, and it is only satisfying the wishes of its loyal customers. However, the protests aimed at the company’s decision to sell rabbit meat speak louder than consumers in favor of consuming rabbit.

Currently, only certain regions of Whole Foods Market stores are selling rabbit meat. These regions include the Mid Atlantic, northeast, North Atlantic, Midwest and Northern California. Instead of advocating raising animals for consumption, Whole Foods Market should focus entirely on promoting sustainability and optimum health. Meat production, even on the level required to sell to Whole Foods Market, is not conducive to a healthy and sustainable future planet. Rabbits are pets to many; so are cows, chickens and pigs. Urge Whole Foods Market to stop selling rabbit meat, effective immediately, as well as seriously consider its stance on sustainability within the meat industry.

Dear John Mackey,

As I am sure you are well aware, Whole Foods Market is currently being scrutinized for selling rabbit meat in select regions. Many protesters are outraged at the thought of farming rabbit for consumption because many people keep rabbits as pets. Rabbits make excellent pets and possess qualities that make them suitable indoor family members, such as impressive litter habits and unique, endearing personalities. I understand that Whole Foods Market has taken four years to develop welfare standards specific to raising and killing rabbits for consumption within its stores. However, these standards are not enough.

The state of our world cannot handle the growing meat consumption of humans. There are far too many humans who desire to consume meat; the only way to continue to satiate this desire is to utilize more land for raising animals, cut welfare standards to meet demand and pollute the environment with more waste and transport emissions. Obviously, the future of animal consumption is not sustainable.

Mr. Mackey, I urge you to reconsider your decision to sell rabbit meat within Whole Foods Market stores. The protesters are loudly opposed, and so is the planet. Rabbit rearing for Whole Foods Market stores only adds more strain to the already severely pressured environment. Please reconsider your stance on selling large quantities of meat and seafood, including rabbit.
