Praise Race Car Driver for Speaking Out Against Animal Abuse

Goal: Thank professional race car driver for speaking out against animals acts for entertainment

Professional race car driver Leilani Münter has joined forces with PETA to ask the Sandusky Speedway to cancel an August 12 appearance by Carson & Barnes Circus, noting that the organization has received “more than 100 citations for violating the Animal Welfare Act by mistreating animals and endangering the public.” The vegan athlete would not only like to see this appearance canceled, but she would also like the Sandusky Speedway to “never promote this circus or any other animal act in the future.”

In a letter to Doug Dock, the General Manager of Sandusky Speedway Motorsports Park, and Will Patterson, the park’s Race Director, Münter writes, “As a professional race car driver and lover of racing, I am disappointed to hear from the folks at PETA that you are planning to host Carson & Barnes Circus at your speedway. This circus is notorious for its mistreatment and exploitation of animals, and as a racing professional, I don’t want our sport associated with such cruelty.”

She goes on to discuss the risk that is placed on performing animals and people due to trainer negligence, saying: “The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) cited the circus just this past April for failure to have a handler present as a man and his son approached from behind to take photos. Violations like this put the public at great risk—on average, one person is killed by an elephant every year in the U.S., and many more are injured. The USDA also cited Carson & Barnes in December for failing to provide a llama who had an eye condition and a thin body with adequate veterinary care. These animals are dragged around the country in trailers with very poor ventilation.”

Münter has gained a great reputation for being an ally to animals and the environment. In 2010, she worked with Save Japan Dolphins to protest the annual slaughter of dolphins in Taiji, Japan. She also raised awareness in regard to dolphin captivity and killings by driving a The Cove themed race car at Daytona International Speedway. Later, she drove a Blackfish themed car to promote the documentary, which draws attention to the alleged neglect and abuse that occurs at SeaWorld. It’s no surprise that she was named by Discovery Channel’s Planet Green Network as the No. 1 Eco Athlete in the world in 2010.

Please take a moment to thank Leilani Münter for speaking out against elephant abuse and for being a fearless environmentalist and animal advocate.

Dear Leilani Münter,

I was pleased to learn that you had teamed up with PETA to ask the Sandusky Speedway to cancel an August 12 appearance by Carson & Barnes Circus, noting that the organization has a reputation for abusing its animals and endangering the public. I am also impressed by the way that you always incorporate environmentalism and animal activism into your career as a professional race car driver.

Thank you for continuously being a champion for voiceless animals all over the world.
