Target: President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi
Goal: Bring charges against those responsible for the massacre of Egyptian protestors
It has been one year since the brutal killing of at least 1,150 demonstrators by Egyptian security forces. In the time since, no members of the army or police were brought to court for crimes against humanity. The killings at the Rab’a al-Adawiya sit-in were planned by the security forces, who estimated that they would end up killing several thousand people. This is a violent suppression of free speech that was carried out at the highest level of Egyptian government. Many of the same officials that planned this brutal crackdown are still in power. The Egyptian government must charge them with crimes against humanity and change its policies regarding civil unrest or risk losing international military funding.
The attack on the Rab’a protest encampment was conducted with the use of armed personnel carriers, bulldozers, ground troops and snipers. There was no dispersal command given by the security forces, either. Troops entered the encampment from the four main entrances and began shooting. They left no safe exit for nearly 12 hours as snipers picked off wounded protestors attempting to enter the Rab’a hospital. At the end of the slaughter, security forces set fire to a field hospital, mosque, and the first floor of the hospital.
Officials in Egypt’s military have tried to justify the dispersal of Rab’a by claiming it endangered the civilians of the area and that the protestors were espousing terrorist ideals. The killing of at least 1,000 peaceful demonstrators has no justification. The Egyptian government must wake up and realize that fact. If nothing is done to fix these violations of international treaties, the Egyptian people will suffer further from international sanctions. Sign this petition to urge Egyptian government to immediately bring charges against those responsible for this heinous act.
Dear President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi,
Your government’s failure to bring charges against those responsible for the Rab’a al-Adawiya massacre is shameful. I ask that you immediately begin an investigation against those involved and try them for war crimes. The killing of at least 1,000 Egyptians by their government is not something that can be hidden or justified. The international community will take action against your government unless those responsible are held accountable.
Lethal force should only be used to protect life, however, the security forces at Rab’a were instructed to destroy the lives of innocent protestors. The memory of this massacre will continue to cast a large shadow across Egypt until justice is served. I ask that you do all that you can to honor the memory of the innocent Egyptians who were brutally killed.
