Target: 24 Hour Fitness, Equinox, Gold’s Gym, and LA Fitness
Goal: Promote use of energy generating exercise equipment to cut carbon footprint
There are a handful of alternative energy solutions which have been created to combat global warming and climate change. From wind, to solar, to hydro, there are a lot of options. But what about the energy that humans create when they hit the gym? There are a number of companies which have created eco-friendly, energy harnessing machines. There are even a number of gyms which already use this equipment to have a greener business model and lower environmental impact.
24 Hour Fitness, Equinox, Gold’s Gym, and LA Fitness are some of the most popular and highly rated gym chains in the United States. 24 Hour Fitness has over 400 locations in the United States and Gold’s Gym serves more than 3 million clients in 38 states and 28 countries. These businesses have a wide reach and use a lot of energy to power the lights and equipment used in their facilities. However, there are green options available.
Current energy harnessing equipment is capable of harnessing 100 watts of energy. Thus, from one person’s work out on one machine, for about an hour, it is possible to power one desktop computer, two laptop computers, a large stereo system or a host of other electronics. Instead of sucking energy and burning fossil fuels when gym equipment is used, why not create the energy needed to power an elliptical trainer, bicycle, or treadmill while working out? And the leftover energy can go to running the lights, air conditioning, and office machines needed to run the facility.
Fitness facilities should be urged to harness the energy being created within their facilities. Instead of being 24 hour locations of high energy use, such locations as the ones targeted here could introduce energy harnessing equipment, begin to reduce their carbon emissions and work to reduce global warming. Urge these companies, which serve millions and millions of people , to make a step in the green direction.
To Whom It May Concern,
Your workout facilities throughout the United States are very popular. You have high rates of clientele and have branches in many different locations. Because of this you have a significant number of workout facilities and high numbers of members. You have a unique opportunity to be on the cutting edge of eco-friendly fitness facilities as well as have a huge impact on the environment.
Because you have so many facilities that serve such high numbers of clients, you use a lot of energy. The energy that is used to power lights, air conditioning, and exercise equipment most likely runs off of fossil fuels, which are significant contributors to global warming. While all this is true, you also are generating untold amounts of energy in your facilities. All the work your clients do to get into shape also produces harnessable energy.
I urge you to incorporate energy harnessing equipment such as bicycles, elliptical trainers, and treadmills in your facility. I hope to see a change in your facilities that will help your clients, help you, and help the environment.
