Save Animals from Inhumane Glue Traps

Target: Richard Sarles,
General Manager and CEO, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority

Goal: Save rodents and other animals from painful deaths caused by inhumane glue traps

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority has been permitting the cruel use of glue traps to kill mice and rats in the area. Glue traps are incredibly dangerous to mice and rats, prolonging their suffering and pain. Rodents remain stuck on glue traps for days at a time as they try to frantically escape, often ripping their own skin off. They eventually die of shock, dehydration, or blood loss from limbs being torn in their struggle to free themselves. Death can take days, as the mice and rats suffer painfully.

Glue traps do not only hurt mice and rats. Animals such as kittens, chipmunks and some birds can find themselves indiscriminate victims of glue traps. All of these animals suffer trauma that lasts for days before their inevitable deaths, unless they are found and freed.

The centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises against using glue traps because of the risks posed by disease from pathogens in the waste of rodents suffering stress. In one case, a hospital that used glue traps failed to check them for over a year. The rodents that were trapped and dead for months attracted a huge fly population that caused hospital inhabitants to get sick.

Strangely, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is claiming that it has no obligation to treat animals humanely. Yet there are preventative measures that can be used to control rodent populations, as well as nonlethal traps and natural repellents. Sign the petition below to demand that the use of inhumane glue traps be abandoned.

Dear Mr. Richard Sarles,

I am appalled and disgusted by the fact that your Transit Authority continues to use glue traps to trap and kill mice and rats along with other non-target animals. In addition to the fact that this is inhumane and a threat to human health, it is also a violation of animal cruelty laws.

Please reconsider the use of glue traps on your Metropolitan Area property and look into other options for more humane rodent population control. Make the ethical decision to take animals and human health out of jeopardy.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Please use contraceptive methods instead… (a slightly more ‘environment friendly’ method!).

  2. Emma Owens says:

These traps make me so angry….to torture a live animal for days until eventually killing it is monstrous and all traps: break-back, leg-hold (as the names suggest) and ALL sickening traps should be banned. So the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is claiming that it “has no obligation to treat animals humanely.” I think those people should be tortured in EXTREME, agonising, DISTRESSING, AWFUL pain and given a slow burning death and taken to hell.

  3. Despina M. Andrelus says:

Nobody, and I mean nobody, needs to torture an animal – even if they feel the need to get rid of it. That, in and of itself, shows the person’s true character – or lack of. **TORTURE IS NOT CULTURE!!**

  4. Despina M. Andrelus says:

Abuse is the ultimate betrayal towards any living soul and absolutely heartbreaking all the way around. You simply can not do such a horrific thing without it killing the best in you. Period. But in case there are any out there who couldn’t care less about torturing animals – which says a lot about you, as well – then think on this: If you find people happily willing to hurt an animal in any way, they are actually finding a venue to act out their deepest, most inner evil fantasies of twisted sickness. There’s nothing more revolting than that. Aside from this, it has been proven over and over again that people who have horrid intents with animals, get bored with them soon enough, ultimately leading them to bigger prey, moving up to people, in order to re-ignite and enhance the excitement that the torturing of animals used to provide. It’s simply never enough. And do not forget, these horrendous monsters also end up raising their children in “the game”, breeding evil, little sickos to continue on “the trade”… no doubt causing abuse in every level of their lives, as well. It’s just a revolting cycle that will never end until someone gets into it and breaks the heart-wrenching pattern. So, even if an animal is not of your utmost concern, then note that it will not stop there. It is just a start. And it is just a matter of time.

“A righteous man regards the life of animals” – PROVERBS 12:10; “If you have men who will exclude any of God’s creatures from the shelter of compassion & pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men” – ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI; “Never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.” – MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.; “I hope to make people realize how totally helpless animals are, how dependent on us, trusting as a child must that we will be kind and take care of their needs…(They) are an obligation put on us, a responsibility we have no rights to neglect, nor to violate by cruelty….” – JAMES HARRIOT; “The greatness of a nation & its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated” – MAHATMA GANDHI

  6. Barrie Hazzard says:

Why do we always think it is acceptable to kill instead of control animals we don’t want in”Our” enviroment. There are electrical plug ins that emit a sound not discernable to humans , but are extremely annoying to rodents. .they use a minimal amount of electricity and are highly effective.

  7. “So many people insist they are against animal abuse, cruelty, suffering and the inhumane treatment of animals, yet they don’t understand they are actively engaging in and supporting egregious suffering, abuse, cruelty and inhumane treatment when they eat animals and their ‘by-products.’ If you are against cruelty, suffering and inhumane treatment, then you go vegan. It’s just that simple.” – Sarah Kiser

  8. I am totally against this. Is awful what people do to Animals. In fist place if some of us wouldn’t be so dirty, and others wouldn’t throw away so much food, we wouldn’t have so many problems with those. They came and come, because some of us, are inviting them, and to those no glue? Many drug addicts, homeless, poor areas, restaurants, hypermarkets, who are responsible for the increasing of the mices/rats, those have not punishment? It is always the most weak that pays the bill.

  9. BAN these disgusting glue devices. Horribly cruel traps.
