Target: President Obama
Goal: Urge Obama to create the world’s largest marine protected area
President Obama is currently receiving public opinions on whether or not to create the world’s largest natural reserve in the ocean. However, he is under great stress from a huge, federally-funded fishing lobby and big oil corporations to discard the plan. This reserve would be a significant step in the direction of protecting our oceans and marine wildlife from exploitation, so we must call upon President Obama to move forward with the plan.
The oceanic reserve would be created in the Pacific Ocean and would be the size of California and Texas combined, making it the largest in the world. Scientists have said that the best way to save the oceans and their disappearing wildlife is to protect huge areas at a time. This will give marine life a chance recover and will protect them from further exploitation.
Recent reports have declared that if our oceans continue to be exploited to the degree that they are now, in four decades coral reefs could be dead and the oceans could be fished-out. This oceanic reserve would double the world’s amount of protected marine area. It could also encourage other governments around the world to create more protected oceanic reserves and save more marine life.
Big fishing and big oil interests are opposing the reserve because it could hurt their businesses and lose them money. The decision will be made soon, so it is imperative that we take charge and show support for this reserve. Sign the petition to urge Obama to pass an executive order to create this vast oceanic reserve.
Dear President Obama,
The plan to create the world’s largest marine protected area is a wonderful and highly laudable idea. The fishing lobby does not have the right to destroy our oceans and marine wildlife for profit. The creation of this oceanic reserve would double the world’s amount of protected marine area and encourage other countries to create their own reserves.
Our marine life is in dire need of protection and many species could become extinct within the next few decades if this exploitation continues. The best way to save our oceans is to protect wide areas at a time from exploitation so that marine life can recover.
Please stand up to big corporations’ interests, save our oceans, and protect our marine life by creating this vast oceanic reserve.
