Success: Popular Airline Ends Partnership with SeaWorld

Target: Gary C. Kelly, CEO of Southwest Airlines

Goal: Commend Southwest Airlines for ending its partnership with SeaWorld due to its history of animal abuse

Following three years of intense pressure from PETA, Southwest Airlines has finally decided against renewing its contract with SeaWorld, a notorious marine park with a long history of animal abuse. This ends a 26-year partnership between the two companies, which began in 1988.

The decision comes as a response to the severe backlash received by SeaWorld with the release of documentaries such as “Blackfish”, which exposed several of the theme park’s cruel and inhumane practices. Most of the marine animals that perform, for example, have been removed from their natural habitats. They are forced to live in horribly crowded conditions that are far from ideal and many die prematurely due to these unnatural living spaces.

As a result, PETA, along with a host of other animal rights organizations and activists, demanded that Southwest Airlines end its partnership with SeaWorld. A previous ForceChange petition urged the company to do the same. As such, the contract will not be renewed at the end of the year. Three Southwest airplanes, which had various SeaWorld animals painted on their bodies, will also be painted over. Southwest Airlines will now join a long list of companies that have already severed their ties with the cruel marine park. Commend Southwest Airlines for doing its part in order to help save these beautiful marine animals from a life of physical and mental anguish.

Dear Mr. Kelly,

I am extremely excited to learn that Southwest Airlines has officially decided to end its partnership with SeaWorld. Documentaries such as “Blackfish” have revealed some of the horrible conditions that marine animals have to endure when held captive in these theme parks. Most of the orcas and whales, for example, are kidnapped from their natural habitats and forced to live in cramped, uncomfortable conditions. Many are also inflicted with harsh sunburns because the water tanks are too shallow.

Given these conditions, it is commendable that you have decided not to renew your partnership with SeaWorld at the end of the year. By doing so, Southwest Airlines is setting an example for other companies in the future to do the same.
