Target: Arnold Schwarzenegger
Goal: Tell Schwarzenegger to cut his ties with corporations destroying forests for profit
Arnold Schwarzenegger was recently one of the producers of a television show about the human impact on global warming called “Years of Living Dangerously”. However, Schwarzenegger has deep personal and financial ties to corporations that make millions from forest destruction. Schwarzenegger needs to stop his hypocrisy and cut his ties to deforestation.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is part-owner of Dimensional Fund Advisors (DFA), a company which has almost one billion dollars tied up in corporations that profit from deforestation. These companies destroy forests mostly through palm oil production and large-scale logging operations.
Palm oil production has many negative impacts on the environment, animals, and native peoples. Many forests across the world are being decimated to produce palm oil. For example, in fifteen years, 98% of the rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia will be destroyed unless effective ways are found to produce palm oil sustainably. Most of the forest fires in regions where palm oil is being produced are either caused or exacerbated by the palm oil industry, contributing to even more deforestation. Orangutans are also being rampantly killed by the palm oil industry, which scientists claim is the biggest threat to orangutan habitats. These scientists estimate that if the extermination of their natural habitats does not stop, orangutans will be extinct within the next twelve years. The palm oil industry has also caused conflicts with the native inhabitants of certain areas who do not want the industry on their land.
Deforestation from logging and palm oil production has similar consequences on the environment. Large-scale deforestation removes vast amounts of trees which in turn cuts way down on the amount of carbon dioxide converted into oxygen. This allows far more carbon dioxide into the air, which erodes the ozone layer and makes the earth hotter and causes more extreme weather.
Deforestation is a terrible thing for our planet and we must work to stop it. Please tell Schwarzenegger to stop financing forest destruction.
Dear Arnold Schwarzenegger,
I commend you on your part in the recent television show “Years of Living Dangerously”, which discusses the ever-growing climate crisis. However, your ties to companies committing large-scale acts of deforestation is in direct contrast to the show’s message and is exacerbating global warming. By being part owner of the Dimensional Fund Advisors, who have millions of dollars invested in deforestation companies, you are financing the destruction of the planet.
The companies that the DFA have ties to are involved in large-scale palm oil and logging operations which are constantly decimating vast swaths of forest, killing wildlife and their habitats, and causing conflicts with native peoples. These companies do not care about the earth and commit these crimes only for money.
Please end your association with these deforestation companies or make the DFA cut its ties to the destruction of the planet.
