Target: President of the United States, Barack Obama
Goal: Protect a popular mountain range from recreational overuse
The San Gabriel Mountains are a popular mountain range located in northern Los Angeles County in California. This wild area, comprised of 700,000 acres of forestland, provides drinking water for about one-third of Los Angeles County, as well as recreational opportunities for over 17 million people. Unfortunately, due to recreational overuse, a tremendous amount of stress has been placed on the mountain’s ecosystem, which lacks the necessary resources to accommodate all of its visitors. As a result, there are persistent problems with trash and water that threaten the mountain’s habitats.
Fortunately, local leaders such as Representative champion Judy Chu are fighting to protect the San Gabriel Mountains. The passage of the San Gabriel National Recreation Area Act, for example, would grant the park federal protection. This would allow the National Park Service to work with the Forest Service on community-driven protection and restoration projects. While this is a step in the right direction, even more can be done to ensure the future of this mountain range.
Tell President Barack Obama to designate the San Gabriel Mountains as a national monument and help ensure that this beautiful area is protected for future generations to enjoy.
Dear President Obama,
The San Gabriel Mountains are a popular attraction that bring between three and five million visitors to the Los Angeles area each year. Unfortunately, this influx of tourists has put a lot of stress on the mountain’s ecosystem, which lacks the resources necessary to support the large volume of people that come to camp, hike, and fish in the region. This stunning area also provides drinking water for roughly one-third of Los Angeles County and helps clean the notoriously filthy air within the city of Los Angeles.
In response to this growing problem, legislation has been proposed that would help preserve this precious mountain range from future degradation. The San Gabriel National Recreation Area Act, for example, would grant the park federal protection. While this is a step in the right direction, it is possible to provide further protection for the popular mountains. To do so, please designate the San Gabriel Mountains as a national monument and help preserve the area for several generations of tourists.
