Urgent: Stop Church Sponsored Pig Wrestling

Target: St. Patrick’s Church, Stephensville, Wisconsin

Goal: Cancel inhumane pig wrestling event

Beating up on pigs is not a wholesome idea of a church sponsored event. However, one Wisconsin church is preparing for what they call a “Pig Rassel,” which allegedly will include violent pig wrestling. The church in question, St. Patrick’s Church of Stephensville, Wisconsin, will be holding a two day event called the Roundup. This is the 44th annual Roundup and the church says it has no plans of canceling in response to animal rights activists or NBC news coverage.

Pig wrestling can be a violent experience. Oftentimes, pigs are kicked, punched, stretched, and twisted in order for the humans involved to gain dominance over the animal. Whether there will be kicking and punching at St. Patrick’s Roundup is beyond the point. While such behavior is obviously cruel and is in direct violation of Wisconsin Chapter 951 “Crimes Against Animals,” the simple act of pig wrestling is inhumane. Pigs are intentionally frightened and then chased by multiple people. The assailants do whatever they can to catch the terrified animal and shove it into a bucket. This is all done for human entertainment and places the mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing of the animals involved on the back burner.

It is important to act quickly. The church Roundup is scheduled for August 9th and 10th, 2014. Share this cause with as many people as possible. We need to show St. Patrick’s Church that they do not have support to host pig wrestling events. Sign this petition to help protect the pigs.

Dear St. Patrick’s Church,

Your 44th annual Roundup has made a stir in the media. The controversial Pig Rassel that you have planned is an immoral imposition of dominance over the pigs in your care. Whether or not the allegations that kicking and punching of the pigs will take place at the upcoming event is not the entire issue. Pig wrestling is not a sport that should be glorified by a church nor presented as fun and games to children.

Pig wrestling is an event in which docile creatures are frightened into flight. One or more attackers chase the frantic pig whilst using whatever force and actions possible to dominate the pig. Is this what children should be seeing? Should they be taught that dominance over animals with the use of excessive force is entertaining, funny, laudable? Is it right that anyone be given the idea that the use of force on a living being for the purpose of manipulation and dominance is a satisfactory way to spend the weekend?

I am disheartened and disappointed by the planned pig wrestling event at your annual Roundup. I do not support this event and I urge you to cancel the Pig Rassel. Take a moment and consider what is best for the pigs and what is best to teach our children.

The church should be teaching kindness and respect towards God’s creatures. They need to stop harming/tormenting animals.

  3. This is not the work of God and a terrible shame people are being brainwashed to think it is acceptable. I Pray that God will show them the way and that this is evil and false teaching.
