Target: Becky Hammon

Goal: Praise Becky Hammon as the first woman to become a full-time, paid assistant coach on a National Basketball Association (NBA) staff

Although Becky Hammon retired from the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), she is entering the men’s National Basketball Association (NBA) as the first full-time, paid assistant female coach in history. As part of a consistent championship team, Hammon has the opportunity to challenge the conventional idea of a NBA coach.

Hammon’s interpersonal skills, work ethic, and impressive former basketball career can serve her well as a pioneer woman in the NBA. In addition, Hammon has studied the Spurs players in practices, games, and film to better coach them. Furthermore, Hammon has competed alongside the Spurs star players in NBA All-Star shooting competitions for years, increasing her familiarity with how the players work. Although Hammon acknowledges that male and female players will experience difficulty playing together due to size difference, she knows she can coach the players as a woman adept in game-planning strategy.

Despite having a controversial past as a WNBA player who chose to play for Russia when the United States basketball team rejected her, Hammon demonstrates that she is not afraid to take an unconventional route to her dreams by accepting the NBA coach position. Her bravery to break the traditional gender barriers that separate the NBA from the WNBA has earned her congratulations from the famous player, Billie Jean King, an advocate for women’s rights in tennis.

With Hammon as an example, more women can view the NBA as providing an equal playing field for a career path. In the selection process, the coaches admit that gender played no part in their decision. They chose Hammon because she was the most qualified applicant. Nevertheless, her willingness to work in a male dominant career deserves support. Please show your appreciation for the strides that Hammon will make in her career as the first NBA assistant coach.

Dear Becky Hammon,

Thank you for your courage and conviction to coach the Spurs basketball team as the first female assistant coach in the NBA. With the Spurs composed of championship players, it is a testament to your strength both as a player and as a person to be chosen to coach such a team.  Your dedication to the team is truly admirable with your careful study. WIth you as a model, many women can aspire to enter the NBA as an equal.

Best of luck in your career.
