Target: Candidate for California Governor Neel Kashkari
Goal: Praise candidate for attempting to understand the situation of the vulnerable homeless population
At the end of the day, common knowledge tells us, there’s no better way to get to know someone than to live life in their shoes. Conservative candidate for California governor Neel Kashkari recently put this adage to the test when he lived on the streets of Fresno, CA for a week. Mr. Kashkari is a millionaire who is normally able to live in the lap of luxury, and yet he made the journey to Fresno with only a few possessions and $40. “California’s most vulnerable citizens deserve leaders who will fight for them,” Mr. Kashkari wrote after his experience.
The plight of homeless people in the U.S. cannot be overstated. One of every six people in the nation live in poverty, according to Think Progress. Without the benefits of a decent income, it is easy for anyone to slip into a state of homelessness, and once they are there they must rely on a patchwork of charities and local and federal agencies to keep afloat. And simply being without money or a place to call home aren’t the only dangers; according to the Task Force for Ending Homelessness, violence against such people is on the rise. It takes vision and compassion to deal with this issue. Mr. Kashkari has made a good start.
Every prominent individual who helps to highlight the issues that homeless people face is taking steps towards a better future. Mr. Kashkari stands as an example to other politicians. By signing this petition, you will thank him for making an effort to understand those less fortunate than himself.
Dear Mr. Kashkari,
Your recent experiences on the streets of Fresno should be an example to all politicians and people everywhere. It isn’t every day that a person in your position makes the effort to experience life as a homeless person. You have demonstrated that you are willing to learn about the plight of those who are less fortunate than you.
Homeless people face difficulties and dangers every day, and they deserve understanding and representation. Thank you for doing your part to make these things possible.
