Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Stop military members from killing civilians in Nigeria
The terrorist group, Boko Haram, based in Nigeria, continues to attack and kill innocent civilians in their quest for power over the country. The government is struggling to stop the killings, and still have not found the 200 missing girls that the terrorist group abducted. Recently though, Amnesty International received graphic video footage, images, and testimonies of men and boys having their throats slit open, and dumped into a mass grave by military members. The corruption in the country has reached unprecedented levels, and the military needs to be held accountable for extrajudicial killings. International help is desperately needed for stability to be brought to Nigeria, and the President of the United States can help.
It’s believed that the events caught in the footage took place on March 14, 2014. Sixteen men and boys were lined up in an open pit–soon to be their graves–and members of the Nigerian military and the Civilian Joint Task Force used a blade to slit the throats of the detainees, where their bodies were dumped into the mass grave. Five of the detainees are shown being killed this way, while the others were revealed by eyewitnesses to be shot dead.
The people that were killed in this graphic video were believed to be detainees of Boko Haram. The terrorist group had released the people, with the instructions that they either stay with them, or leave. More than 600 of these detainees were recaptured by military forces, and instead of being held prisoners, they were killed. Other incidents of extrajudicial killings occurred in various cities and towns, where civilians were killed by military forces without a proper trial.
In May 2013, the president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, issued a state of emergency over Nigeria. To deal with the overwhelming problem of Boko Haram, the military has become extremely heavy handed in their efforts to exterminate the terrorists. In just 2014 alone, at least 4,000 people have been killed by this conflict, most of which are civilians. It is clear that Nigeria needs help if any amount of stability will be restore to this country. Urge the president of the United States to use his power and military force to bring those responsible for the extrajudicial killings to justice.
Dear President Barack Obama,
Amnesty International recently received footage of military officials slitting the throat of civilians, and then dumping their bodies into a mass grave. This footage is no doubt disturbing for those who have to view it, and it angers me that military forces are the ones who are carrying out these killings. Since Nigeria’s president declared a state of emergency, the military’s tactics have become more violent.
I am writing this letter urging you to do something about this violence. If you need to send in troops, please do so, as this violence is horrendous and must be stopped. These are innocent human beings suffering, and it breaks my heart to see so many people dying. Bring those who are responsible for this violence to justice and stop the killing.
