Target: Walmart CEO Greg Foran
Goal: Decry Walmart’s new policy preventing pregnant women from taking necessary medical leave
Walmart has quietly passed a new policy that changes its approach to employee health, task changes, and taking of unpaid leave. Now, pregnant women are required to complete all tasks set forth by managers and supervisors—including handling dangerous chemicals, lifting heavy boxes, or climbing ladders—completing disregarding the law in place that requires appropriate accommodation for pregnant women within the workplace.
Walmart’s new policy leaves women and their unborn children vulnerable to unsafe work conditions or actions, even when their doctors recommend that they avoid those environments. Still, working pregnant women at Walmart have no choice but to be forced into unpaid leave or to endure those harmful surroundings for their meager paychecks.
Pregnant women deemed to be “unhealthy” now have the opportunity to be reassigned work duties. However, “unhealthy” is a wildly vague term, and many pregnancies could be considered “healthy” regardless of whether or not the mother thinks so. Many female Walmart employees are quickly fired once their pregnancies are discovered by managers or upper-level administrators. Pregnant women are viewed as a liability that will not provide all the services that employees are “supposed” to provide. Walmart managers and overseers often fail to accept that they can allow the women to transfer to other Walmart areas, such as cashiering and other non-manual tasks that do not burden the expectant mothers. These actions are illegal according to the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, which protects pregnant workers from being unreasonably fired.
Sign the petition below to tell Walmart that its new discriminatory policy against pregnant workers is unjust and hurtful, and urge the company to adjust its policies to protect the health and rights of the hard-working expectant mothers in its employ.
Dear Mr. Foran,
As you know, Walmart recently made changes to its policy regarding pregnant employees. Unfortunately, this policy change has made pregnant women’s lives more difficult by allowing administrators to easily discriminate against them. Instead of being accommodated as is required by the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, your company has elected to only make available work modifications for women who are deemed “unhealthy,” a wildly dubious qualification for providing pregnant women with safe duties in the workplace. What’s more, female Walmart employees across the country have been unreasonably fired simply for becoming pregnant.
You must address this new policy and revise it to more accurately follow the Pregnancy Discrimination Act’s national regulations. I urge you to actively show support for the many pregnant women who are being discriminated against due to this new policy change.
