Thank Governor for Protecting Pets from Theft

German Shepard dog

Target: Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo

Goal: Thank the governor for passing legislation that will protect pets from theft

The state of New York has passed new measures meant to protect pets–namely dogs– from pet theft. While it is hard to believe that a pet would be stolen from their owners, these pets are unfortunately sold in flea markets, or used in illegal dog fighting rings. The measure imposes a $1,000 fine, and the thieves could also face jail time for their actions. Shelters and other animal welfare groups have praised the governor for his actions, and he should be thanked for reducing the amount of abuse seen by breeders and dealers.

A pet can be stolen for many reasons, but they are mostly motivated by profit. Pets such as dogs, are taken away from their owners, where these are animals are sold to flea markets, retailers, and sometimes to people who run dog fighting rings. Dog fighting is considered a felony in New York, but because of the high profits involved in this business, these operations are routinely raided by police authorities. In 2013 alone, 590 pets were stolen from their owners according to the American Kennel Club. This separation is extremely traumatic to both the pets and their owners, and the thieves responsible should be punished.

Another part of this legislation requires pet mills and breeders in general to be held accountable for their actions and responsibilities. All breeders and dealers will be held to the state’s minimum standards, and the state reserves the right to make these standards stricter. Puppy mills, which are known for their filthy conditions, and unethical treatment of dogs will be forced to raise their standards or be at risk of shutting down.

Hopefully these new measures will combat the levels of abuse and neglect seen in breeders and dealers. Our dogs are our companions, and they should be treated with the utmost care and respect. Thank the governor for enacting legislation to protect our pets from theft and abusive breeders.

Dear Governor Andrew Cuomo,

Recently, your state passed a new law that punishes pet thieves, and also ensures that pet breeders take full responsibility in ensuring their pets are taken care of. Thieves are not only fined, but they can be placed in jail for their actions. Breeders will also have to meet minimum standards, ensuring that all dogs will be taken care of before they are adopted out.

I am writing this letter to thank you for your commitment to animal welfare. Our dogs are companions and as such, they should be treated humanely and with respect. I, along with many dog owners in the state of New York, would like to extend our heartfelt thanks for these actions.
