Prohibit Carrying Long Guns in Public

open carry

Target: Texas Governor Rick Perry

Goal: Prevent Texans from openly carrying rifles and long guns in public

Proponents of open carry laws in Texas have resorted to disturbing tactics to get their message across. For the past few months, people with rifles and other long guns slung across their backs have entered fast food chains and retailers, frightening fellow customers and prompting several corporations to demand that guns be left outside their establishments. Urge Texas Governor Rick Perry to prohibit Texans from carrying any type of gun in public.

The protests are in retaliation to Texas’s ban on the open carrying of handguns. Several other states, including California, New York, and South Carolina, have similar bans while other states allow carrying handguns with a permit or license and still others have no restrictions on carrying handguns. Protesters say that they would prefer to carry handguns in public but are forced to carry assault rifles instead, as they are not explicitly banned.

Fortunately, there has been a backlash against these frightening and disturbing displays. Many retailers have issued their own bans on carrying guns into their stores since their other customers feel, rightfully, uncomfortable and unsafe getting coffee in line with someone carrying a deadly weapon. People have the right to go about their business in public places without living in fear or feeling intimidation. So-called second amendment rights do not trump other people’s right to feel safe in their daily lives. And they don’t feel the need to carry a gun to do it.

There is no need to be able to carry a gun of any kind into public establishments. It only incites fear in others. After all, how can members of the public tell the difference between someone carrying a gun to exercise their “rights” and someone who is about to commit mass murder? Sign this petition to encourage Governor Perry to ban open carrying of rifles and assault weapons in Texas in addition to handguns.

Dear Governor Perry,

Recent protests among proponents of carrying handguns in Texas have caused fear and confusion among members of the public. People should not be allowed to carry rifles and assault weapons on their person while in public establishments such as coffee shops, retailers, or restaurants. Please extend Texas’s ban on carrying handguns to include these deadly weapons.

Advocates of open carrying laws are showing the public exactly why no guns of any kind should be allowed in public. People have entered stores and shops with long rifles slung across their backs, causing fear amongst members of the general public who have the right to a peaceful environment and not one marred by the threat of violence.

Guns are not toys nor are they fashion accessories. They are serious, lethal weapons that are all too frequently used to murder innocent people. I urge you to prohibit the open carrying of long guns in pubic places in the state of Texas.
