Target: Brian Deering, Director of the Fair Foundation
Goal: Show your appreciation of the resourcefulness used to feed both people and animals by recycling food that would have otherwise been wasted
An accident involving an overturned truck carrying 15,000 pounds of fruit led to something positive with the salvageable fruit being donated to the Alameda County Food Bank and to the Oakland Zoo. Even though the animals at Oakland Zoo are able to enjoy a bounty of food, the fruit was a special treat with jackfruit and other exotic fruits in the mix. None of the fruit went to waste with portions of it being frozen for the elephants, giraffes, and other animals of the Oakland Zoo. The people of the Alameda County Food Bank can also rejoice in the abundance of fruit, especially with jackfruit being an expensive luxury due to its priceless health benefits.
A mere ten percent of the 60,000 pounds of fruit had to be discarded by the produce company that experienced the spill. The other 90 percent, totaling $100,000 in revenue, was donated to people in need of food at the Alameda County Food Bank and to the animals at the Oakland Zoo. With a few trucks and a few staff members from a tow truck company, the food was easily transferred to the bank and to the zoo.
With hundreds of thousands of edible food lost each year in truck accidents and few of it actually put to good use, the Fair Foundation, that oversaw the food donation, saved literally tons of food. In addition, with one in six people in America living hungry and with more mouths to feed as the population grows worldwide, people cannot afford to let food go to waste.
Please thank the people who put in the time and effort to avoid food waste and to give to both hungry people and animals.
Dear Mr. Deering,
I am writing to thank you for organizing the mass donation of food to the Oakland Zoo and to the Alameda County Food Bank as Director of the Fair Foundation. You truly turned an accident into something meaningful for hundreds of people and animals.
Please continue to ensure that no food goes to waste and that no person or animal goes hungry and encourage other companies to follow the Fair Foundation’s example.
