Stop School from Raffling Elephant Off to Hunters

Target: Headmaster of Gobabis Gymnasium Wimpie Silver

Goal: Stop rare desert elephant from being raffled off to hunters as a trophy kill

Gobabis Gymnasium is a private school in Namibia that is hosting an upcoming event in which a rare desert elephant will be raffled off to hunters. Participants are encouraged to buy a raffle ticket priced at about $100 USD to a win a chance to kill the elephant. Other prizes include transportation from Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek, Namibia, 10 days of accommodation in the region, rifle use, a supplied tracker and vehicle, and field preparation for the trophy kill. In return, the money collected at the event will be used as funds for the school. The event was first advertised on a website called Tactical Life but was taken down after much backlash from local and worldwide communities. However, the removal of the advertisement does not confirm Gobabis Gymnasium’s intent to cancel the raffle. The school has also refused to answer email inquiries about the event, which is still a cause for concern for the desert elephant’s life.

Namibia’s desert elephants had faced the brink of extinction by poachers before the international ivory ban came into place in 1989, but they are still extremely threatened. The Conservation Action Trust has documented approximately 100 desert elephants left in the wild with only 18 males. Gobabis Gymnasium’s raffle event will only serve to push the species closer to extinction, since the “prize” elephant is male.

Please sign this petition to stop Gobabis Gymnasium from raffling off the life of a precious species that needs to be protected.

Dear Headmaster Silver,

I understand that you are planning to host a raffling event with a rare desert elephant as the prize. Although anyone is eligible to enter the raffle, you are mainly marketing the elephant to hunters who seek a trophy kill. Elephants are highly intelligent and emotional creatures. They are not objects to be sold to the highest bidder. Their lives are not meant to be gambled away and treated lightly like a game. Your school should be a leader in educating the public about conserving your rare desert elephants. Surely there are other prizes you can raffle off to collect funds for the school. I urge you to either cancel the raffle altogether to save the life of a precious, threatened species or change the prize. Do not contribute to the eradication of these species.
