Target: President Otto Perez Molina
Goal: Implement international court ruling calling for decrease in violence against women.
The Guatemalan government must do all that it can to follow up on an Inter-American Court of Human Rights ruling and bring suspects in a high profile murder case to justice. The Court found that Guatemalan officials improperly investigated the 2001 rape, torture and murder of 15-year-old Maria Isabel Veliz Franco. Witnesses gave the police the names of multiple men who are believed to have committed the atrocious crime. The Guatemalan government should follow these leads that were not investigated over a decade ago.
Unfortunately, since the 2001 case that attracted major media attention in Guatemala and abroad, little has been done to decrease violence against women. The court ruling noted attempts by the government to quell the violence, while also mentioning that the vast majority of violent crimes committed against women go unpunished. The government must do more to protect its citizens. Women like Maria Isabel Veliz Franco deserve to live in a society in which they feel safe to interact.
In the last year alone, 522 women were killed in Guatemala according to state statistics. The lessons of the Veliz Franco case will only be fully learned when the government steps in to seriously halt the epidemic of violence in Guatemala. Sign this petition to call for the full implementation of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights ruling.
