Target: Andrew Cuomo, Governor of New York
Goal: Urge Governor Cuomo to push shutdown of nuclear power plant
In the search to find green energy resources, nuclear power is often cited. However, as we have seen in numerous tragedies throughout the world, we need to be extremely careful when it comes to nuclear power. It can be a great source of energy, but also can be quite detrimental, as we saw even as recently as Fukushima.
The Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant, which sits less than fifty miles away from New York City, is among the plants of which we need to tread carefully. When it was built, it was meant to be used for forty years. We are now approaching the end of its safe use, which operations meant to stop in December 2015. However, because the power plant provides up to 30% of New York City’s power, politicians are having trouble finding a replacement power source. Other issues of the nuclear power plant are that it is killing a lot of the wildlife in its surrounding area. It is also at a high risk for earthquake damage, and earthquake damage could potentially cause huge issues.
Right now, politicians are debating whether or not to extend the operation. We believe, and we urge Governor Andrew Cuomo to side with us, that the nuclear power plant in Indian Point must be shut down by the pre-proposed date. Studies have shown that New York City and the surrounding areas have surplus of power, and could run well until 2020 without Indian Point. In the interim, between 2015 and 2020, the state could figure out a cleaner and less life-threatening form of energy for the state.
Governor Cuomo has spoken against the Indian Point plant, and we just want to urge him that he is right, and that he should continue fighting his side, without giving into politics.
Dear Governor Cuomo,
We are happy to hear that you spoke out against the Indian Point Power Plant. For reasons we are sure you already understand, the plant should be shut down within the year, as it is a threat to its entire surrounding area.
We are writing to you today to not get lost in the politics. We appreciate your continued position against the plant. It is dangerous, and there are many alternative forms of energy out there, that are more safe, and better for the environment.
