Stop Cruel and Unsafe Poultry Practices

Target: Chief Executive of the United Kingdom’s Food Standards Agency Catherine Brown

Goal: Stop unsanitary and cruel poultry practices in Great Britain

Increasingly more people are turning from consuming red meat and consuming more poultry, which is especially evident in Great Britain. However, this momentous shift in diet trend lead the poultry producing companies to focus more on profit making at the expense of the chickens’ quality of life. This not only affects the chickens involved in the poultry industry, but affects the humans who consume the poultry products as well.

The conditions of most chickens in poultry production in Great Britain are quite dire, since most poultry corporations focus on producing as many chickens as possible in the least amount of time. This focus leads companies to neglect safer poultry handling methods, and in turn leads to poorer quality of life for the chickens. The chickens spend their short lives of six to seven weeks crammed into coops of 30,000 or more chickens living in their own droppings. Figures from an investigation into poultry methods by The Guardian in Great Britain indicate that around five percent of chickens die from diseases or other factors before they even reach slaughter.

Research conducted by The Guardian also indicates that nearly 92 percent of all chicken on sale in Great Britain is contaminated with fecal matter. This may help to explain why food poisoning from poultry consumption affects around 250,000 Britons every year.

Please sign the petition below to urge the CEO of the United Kingdom’s Food Standards Agency to put an end to the unhealthy practices of poultry production, and to work on safer methods for the handling of the chickens.

Dear Catherine Brown,

The poultry industry in Great Britain has been especially prosperous over the last few years, due to an increase in the numbers of chicken consumers. Although this is great news to large poultry corporations, the effects on the chickens in production and human consumers of the chicken have been negative. The poultry companies have shifted to increased profit making and have neglected safer poultry methods. This lead to an increase of diseased chickens and an increase in food poisoning cases from contaminated chickens.

I urge you to put an end to the unhealthy poultry practices that have been prevalent within large poultry companies in Great Britain, and to urge the corporations to focus on safer and healthier practices for poultry production.
