Target: United States House Majority Whip Steve Scalise
Goal: State clearly that impeachment of the president is not an option
Clarity is a useful thing, in politics and elsewhere. Recently, a chorus of conservative voices has been calling for the impeachment of U.S. President Obama. Impeachment proceedings, of course, depend on the willingness of the conservative-dominated House of Representatives to begin proceedings. The likelihood of such an occurrence is very slim due to a number of factors; however, a prominent member of leadership of the House recently refused to publicly state that impeachment will not happen. Majority Whip Steve Scalise, when questioned about impeachment on Fox News Sunday, repeatedly ducked the question while attacking the president.
The main barrier to impeachment is that the accusations leveled against the president are either not true or not impeachable offences. Representative Scalise, for example, stated that the Supreme Court has ruled 12 times that the president exceeded his authority, which according to The Rachel Maddow Show is not true. In fact, impeachment is so unlikely to succeed that many liberals are awaiting an attempt with glee, according to The Hill, in the assumption that the move would make conservatives look unpopular and not succeed in removing the president from power. Some conservatives seem to be aware of this; Speaker of the House John Boehner has ruled out impeachment, according to the Washington Post. Given all of this, it makes no sense for Representative Scalise to continue to avoid the question of whether impeachment is on the table.
There is never any need to increase the amount of confusion and uncertainly in government. Representative Scalise is certainly aware that impeachment cannot occur and he should tell that to anyone who asks. By signing this petition, you will call on him to take impeachment off the table.
Dear Representative Scalise,
Your recent refusal to state that impeachment of the president isn’t an option is a disappointing development that does not serve to do anything except increase confusion. As you must be aware, impeachment proceedings have already been taken off the table by Speaker John Boehner. As a member of House leadership you should be committed to leading and inspiring your colleagues to meaningful action and not refusing to answer questions about impeachment.
There is no reason to believe that impeachment proceedings would remove the president from his position, and every reason to believe that the attempt would tarnish your party in the eyes of the nation. I urge you to act responsibly and tell anyone who asks that impeachment will not happen.
