Goal: Applaud massive online courses for giving a large number of people access to an excellent education
Target: Rick Levin, CEO of Coursera
While the internet has its pitfalls, such as increased distraction or decreased privacy, it also has creates excellent platform for learning and collaboration. A very clear manifestation of this is in massive open online classes (MOOCs). These are generally classes that are taught by an university lecturer. The professor posts videos of his lectures, along with handouts, notes, quizzes and final products. Because 1000s of people can sign up for the class, students grade each other on essays and written assignments.
Coursera is a leader in creating MOOCs. They aggregate classes from all over the world, and many top universities. They brand themselves as a way to improve your life. Coursera envisions a future in which everyone has access to a top-tier education, and eduction is not restricted to the upper classes. On Coursera, there are over four hundred courses available.
The website boasts the benefits of online learning. People can work more at their own pace, which is good for anyone integrating these courses into an already full schedule. Students are more engaged and focused online, and generally retain that information better. For nominal fees, you can specialize in an area, like international development or in computer coding.
We want to thank Coursera and its peers for committing themselves to providing quality education for free, where anyone can access it. Coursera is great for people who cannot necessarily afford to go to school, or for people who want to supplement their own education. We hope to see them continue to foster a love of learning.
Dear Mr. Levin,
We want to thank you for harnessing the potential power of the internet and creating great, massive open online courses. While the internet can be used to simply exchange emails or play games, you are helping tap into the potential to communicate education, one of the most powerful things in the world.
Not only are you providing education through use of video, you are also allowing people to take quizzes, create final projects and write papers. You are allowing people to go beyond just reinforcing what they are learning in other classes. They can really fully learn and understand new information through Coursera. In a sense, you are starting the revolution for how we learn, and the control we have over our education. For that, we thank you.
