Target: New York City Mayor, Bill de Blasio
Goal: Commend the New York City government for enacting a paid sick leave bill
Recently, a new paid sick leave law was enacted in New York City, which has been hindered in the past by the previous mayor. This new law enables most employees in New York City to have paid time off to take care of themselves or a family member.
Under the law, individuals who work in New York City for more than 80 hours a year can earn up to 40 hours of sick leave each year. Previously, the mayor at the time was planning to veto the bill so that employees were not guaranteed sick leave pay, as this previous Force Change petition details. Now, employers must provide paid sick leave if they have five or more employees in their company who work in New York City, or they must provide unpaid sick leave if they have fewer than five employees in their company.
The city has also officially launched a public education and outreach campaign to inform employees and employers about the specifics of the newly passed law. Some components of the education and outreach campaign include multi-phased advertising, numerous online information, a series of events, and various partnerships to expand outreach efforts.
Starting July 30, 2014, New York City employees have been able to start using accrued sick leave. The New York City Government website provides additional information on specific conditions under the new law. The website also provides a calendar with training and events dates that are open to the public.
Please sign the petition below to praise the passing of this law in New York City, which will enrich the livelihoods of most New York City employees.
Dear Mayor Blasio,
Paid sick leave is an important security for numerous employees to safely take care of themselves or a family member in times of need. However, the previous mayor was planning to veto the passing of a bill to allow New York City employees to accrue sick leave. The recent enactment of the successfully passed bill allowing for paid sick leave was heartening to read about. Thank you for allowing for the city employees to have this work security.
Please keep up with the great work that you are contributing to the city of New York. Many employees will benefit directly from the bill that has been passed, and their lives are a little more enriched because of it.
