Support Justice for Killed and Tortured Tortoise

gopher tortoise

Target: Florida Wildlife Conservation Division of Law Enforcement Director Colonel Calvin Adams

Goal: Praise the arrest of teens who tortured and killed an endangered tortoise

Two teenage girls recently uploaded a video onto Facebook of themselves setting a small gopher tortoise on fire before crushing it to death. In the video, the girls pour flammable liquid onto the gopher tortoise and attempt to light it on fire while laughing at its unsuccessful attempts to escape. One of the girls are heard saying, “Burn, baby. Now you’re scared of us, huh?” They continue to laugh and curse as they throw the tortoise down the street. In a second video they uploaded, one of the abusers is seen viciously stomping on the tortoise’s shell until it breaks, leading to its death. “His heart came out with a bunch of grass. He’s dead. That’s funny,” one of the girls says behind the camera.

When the girls began receiving more negative comments, they removed the video from Facebook. However, a classmate reposted the video which rapidly became viral and it was not long before people flooded reports to authorities.

In Florida, gopher tortoises are a threatened species and has been under protection of state law since 2007. Col. Calvin Adams, director of Florida Wildlife Conservation Division of Law Enforcement, stated, “We take these issues very seriously. We appreciated the help from the public and our partners in working to protect our valuable natural resources.” Jennifer Emoke Greene, age eighteen, and her fifteen-year-old friend now face charges including felony cruelty to animals and a second-degree misdemeanor for harassing, harming, and killing an animal. If Greene is convicted, she will face upwards of five years in prison for her animal cruelty charge and either sixty days of jail time or a $500 fine for her misdemeanor charge. Greene’s fifteen-year-old accomplice will be handled in juvenile court.

Please sign this petition to thank Col. Adams and Florida officials for their swift actions in arresting these abusive teenage girls.

Dear Col. Adams,

Thank you for arresting the two teenage girls involved in the brutal torture of a gopher tortoise. There are many animal abuse cases that go ignored throughout the country, but your swift actions send a message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated. You have set an example for many communities in Florida, and I sincerely hope this case will deter potential animal abusers from lashing out on innocent creatures whether they are a threatened species or not. I also hope that these girls will reflect upon their actions and get psychiatric help, as cruelty to animals is a precursor to more violent crimes in the future.

Again, thank you for your dedication and hard work.

  1. No punishment is too severe for this act of violence and atrocity towards an innocent, defenseless, helpless, beautiful animal who has the right to life as we humans do. These thugs have no conscience.

  2. paula eaton says:

These two teens are vicious monsters. I am glad for their arrest. Zero tolerance for animal cruelty.
