Target: United Nations
Goal: Support United Nations’ suggestion of moratorium on the development of robots equipped with machine guns and other weapons
The United States, South Korea, and Russia have developed highly advanced robots which are designed to replace soldiers in war. These robots are equipped with heavy artillery and are unable to tell the difference between a combatant and a civilian, a spy and a refugee. The United Nations has called them the imminent future of warfare and has advised nations to implement moratoria on the research, development, and use of these new killing machines.
The UN met recently to discuss these robots, called Lethal Autonomous Robotics (LARS). The UN said that they are “weapon systems that, once activated, select and engage targets without further human intervention.” Lacking human morality and the ability to think ethically, these robot soldiers would be incapable of making ethical decisions on the battlefield and could gun down any number of innocent people.
The use of these robots in conflict would also create an even further distance between the human perpetrators and the actual warfare. This would allow leaders to avoid all responsibility and write off any kind of slaughter as merely an error with the programming. The elite calling the shots could not be held accountable because they would blame a malfunction in the machines. The UN report stated, “In addition to being physically removed from the kinetic action, humans would also become more detached from the decisions to kill — and their execution.”
The creation of these killing-machines is a drastic step on the path to fulfilling the robot takeover present in so many science fiction stories. Once these are fully developed and widespread, there will be no turning back. Please support the United Nation’s strong suggestion of imposing an international ban on these Lethal Autonomous Robotics.
Dear United Nations,
Thank you for your wise actions regarding the newly developed Lethal Autonomous Robotics. The international ban on these horrendous and terrifying machines must be put into place. If every country does not place a moratorium on these robot soldiers, some countries will use the excuse that other countries are developing LARS in order to create LARS themselves.
I support your advisement of an international ban and fervently hope that it makes a difference to war-mongering countries like the United States and Russia. These killing-machines will never bring peace, only perpetuate war and cause more avoidable carnage. I commend you on your effort to halt this horrifying technology and urge you to keep doing as much as you can to keep LARS from being developed and becoming widespread.
