Target: Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi
Goal: Implement and enforce law that protects children from sexual attacks
Recently in India, a six-year-old girl was raped by two staff members at her school. The violent attack has brought attention, once again, to India’s failure of protecting children from sexual violence. While laws are in place to protect them, these laws are rarely enforced. India needs to implement these laws if their children are to remain safe and secure.
Unfortunately, this young girl’s tale is not the only one regarding sexual violence. A few months prior to this incident, two teenage girls were found hanging from a tree, gang raped and murdered. The attack happened when the two left to defecate in a field because their homes didn’t have plumping. In that same month, children at a shelter reported being regularly raped, forced to watch and reenact pornographic sex scenes, and eat feces. Another incident involved a five-year-old being abducted by her neighbors, where she was raped and tortured for two days.
The recent rape of the six-year-old girl has resulted in protests and public outcry over the state of protection regarding children. The law that is currently in place, Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act, has not been implemented or enforced. This law is supposed to allow easy access to both reporting and investigating. Complaints filed about rape cases from the victim’s parents are not always investigated by police. And worse, some police officers and rapists work together to keep the victim and their families silent on the matter.
Children should feel safe when they are at home or in school. Demand the Prime Minister to implement and enforce this law so children don’t have to worry about their safety and security.
Dear Prime Minister Narendra Modi,
Recently, a six-year-old girl in your country was raped by school staff, and allegedly the principal of the school tried to cover up the case by destroying evidence. This sexual violence has caused outrage in your people, and many are demanding reform. It is unfortunate that your country is known for misogyny and mistreatment of women. I implore you to change this.
I urge you to uphold the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act, and ensure that your police force implement and enforce it. All officers must follow the procedures listed in this law, and if a complaint is filed, it should be followed up. Those who are corrupt and are trying to hide evidence should be fired and punished by the full extent of the law. I urge you to set an example and ensure children in your country aren’t victims of sexual violence.
