Target: Indian lawmaker Thane Rajan Vichare
Goal: Denounce Indian lawmaker who force-fed a Muslim man during the holy month of Ramadan
A recent video shows Rajan Vichare, a member of the Indian political organization Shiv Sena, force-feeding a Muslim man while he was fasting during Ramadan. Consequently, leaders from the opposition party erupted into protests, arguing that Vichare lacked respect for the man’s religious beliefs.
Shiv Sena is a Hindu nationalist organization that supports the Marathi ethnic people who live in Maharashtra, India. At a catered event, 11 Shiv Sena officials expressed that they were unhappy with the quality of food and the fact that they were not served traditional Maharashtrian food. As a result, the parliament leaders marched into the kitchen, where Vichare forced chapati, a type of Indian bread, into the mouth of one of the caterers. The caterer tried to resist and was heard saying “my fast” in the video. After the release of the video, Vichare apologized and stated that he was not aware that the employee was a Muslim.
The spokesperson for Shiv Sena, Sanjay Raut, stated that the political party does support the Hindu religion but that “we all have always followed to respect all religions. But the truth is the facilities given in Maharashtra Sadan are pretty bad,” according to ABP News. However, this is not the first time the employees have been abused by Sena officials. In order to prevent further discrimination against the Muslim religion by political leaders, sign the petition below.
Dear Parliament Member Thane Rajan Vichare,
A video was released of you force-feeding a Muslim man who was fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. As a result of your actions, leaders of the opposition party have turned to protest.
The actions that took place at Maharashtra Sadan were shameful and reflected poorly on yourself and your party. Although you have apologized, you justified your actions by explaining that it was merely a protest of the poor quality of food that had been served. However, not only were your actions inappropriate as they disrespected the caterer’s religious beliefs, but they were not a respectful form of complaint.
As a result, I urge you to take responsibility for your actions and apologize without false justification. Remember that a position of power does not place you in a position of higher importance. Everyone deserves to have their religious beliefs honored regardless of their status in society.
