Save Bees from Harmful Pesticides

Target: Rep. John Boehner, Elected Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives

Goal: Save honeybees and other pollinators from hazardous pesticides

Honeybees are suffering a serious decline in number due to the use of harmful neonicotinoids (a class of pesticides). Despite massive bee die-offs, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will not take action until an official review is completed in 2018. Fortunately, a new bill, known as the Saving America’s Pollinators Act (H.R. 2692), has been introduced to the Congress, which will call for the suspension of the use of neonicotinoids until further scientific evidence can prove that they are safe.

Currently, neonicotinoids are the most widely used insecticides in the world, despite research findings that indicate their contribution to overall poor pollinator health. Last year, the European Union officially began a two-year ban on the use of three of the worst neonicotinoids in an effort to secure a future for the bees and other pollinators. The United States, however, has been slow to follow in the E.U.’s footsteps.

We need to take action. By signing this petition, you are urging your representative to support the Saving America’s Pollinators Act. Protect the bees from any more exposure to these deadly pesticides.

Dear Rep. John Boehner,

I am writing to urge you to support the Saving America’s Pollinators Act (H.R. 2692). Recently, it has been noted that the population of bees and other pollinators are declining at frightening rates in the U.S. Scientific evidence and research has linked this problem to the use of a dangerous class of pesticides known as neonicotinoids.

Neonicotinoids are the most widely used insecticides in the world, despite their lethal effects on bees and other pollinators. In December 2013, the European Union initiated a two-year ban on three of the most toxic neonicotinoids to protect pollinators. We need to do the same.

Honeybees are a vital part of the ecosystem. Drastic die-offs will result in major consequences for the agriculture and food systems. Honeybees pollinate over 70 of the 100 major crops in the U.S., which translates to an estimated $20 billion to $30 billion worth of food annually. This includes of sorts of fruits, almonds, avocados, etc. That’s why it’s critical that we take action.

Please support H.R. 2692, the Saving America’s Pollinators Act to protect the bees and other important pollinators.

Maybe, we can provide more jobs for people to hand-pollinate crops, just like certain areas in China are now forced to do in places where they have already lost all their bees.
