Approve of Efforts to Monitor Animal Agriculture

Target: Will Potter, journalist

Goal: Approve of an individual’s efforts to monitor animal agricultural farm techniques

Recently an independent journalist has been recognized for his efforts in assisting with the monitoring of animal agricultural practices in the United States. Laws that are against the monitoring of agriculture farming have been set in place, and this journalist is attempting to use drones to increase the transparency of farming practices.

Will Potter raised around $75,000 on an online Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for drone purchases. Potter’s aim with the drones is to evade state regulations that are in effect in at least seven states and make it illegal to videotape or record secretly on farms. The drones are to be used solely for the purpose of shedding light on the guarded practices within the animal farming industry and to ensure the proper treatment of farm animals.

Many officials in the Animal Agriculture Alliance are critical of Potter’s plans to deploy the drones over animal farms to monitor farm operations. Some warn Potter that the drones may be mistaken for birds during duck season, so Potter is looking into a variety of drones to solve this possible problem.

This is not the first time that activists have used this kind of technology for monitoring animal agriculture farms. PETA had started using drones to monitor farm activities in April of 2013.

Individuals taking action against the relatively wide-reaching problem of the monitoring of animal agriculture practice is truly admirable. Please sign the petition below to thank Potter for his efforts in increasing the transparency of animal agriculture practices in the United States.

Dear Will Potter,

You often hear about large charity organizations such as PETA making an impact on animal practice. However, hearing about your efforts in purchasing drones to monitor farm activities comes as a pleasant surprise in terms of the power of individuals making a direct impact through their own means.

Thank you for making an initiative to contribute to the monitoring of large animal agriculture farms. Usually, individuals who are not directly affiliated with larger organizations feel that they are not able to contribute considerably to the cause, except in terms of monetary donations. You have set an example as to what individuals can achieve on their own or by assisting larger organizations such as PETA. Please keep up with your inspirational work.
