Save Foxes from Cruel Trapping

Target: Guy Pilon, Mayor of Vaudreuil-Dorion

Goal: Save foxes from being unnecessarily trapped

The town of Vaudreuil-Dorion in Quebec  is considering hiring trappers to remove foxes in response to complaints by some residents about a perceived danger from foxes to both humans and pets in the area. This is a gratuitously strong reaction to the presence of foxes.

There has been only one incident so far in Vaudreuil-Dorion of a fox attacking a pet, and there are a large number of Vaudreuil-Dorion citizens who don’t believe hiring a trapper will be necessary. A local trapper has gone on record stating that the foxes will likely be of no danger to the people or pets of Vaudreuil-Dorion. According to the trapper, foxes in urban areas have adapted to cohabitate well with humans. Also, foxes historically do not go out of their way to attack humans or to put themselves in a position where they might become hurt.

Even if the city decides that it should begin trapping foxes, it would have to wait until the legal trapping season begins in October. Considering all of this, we need to let the city of Vaudreuil-Dorion know that it is not okay to jump to the conclusion of hiring trappers to deal with the increased number of foxes in their area.

By signing this petition below, you will urge Mayor of Vaudreuil-Dorion Guy Pilon to consider other options before hiring trappers to deal with the fox issue.

Dear Mayor Pilon,

As you are surely aware, Vaudreuil-Dorion has had a large increase in its fox population recently. In response to citizen complaints, I understand that you are considering hiring trappers to deal with this fox situation. This is a gratuitous reaction to one fox-related incident, and it would not be a good choice for your town or for the foxes.

According to a local trapping expert, foxes rarely attack humans or their pets and, in urban areas, have adapted to cohabitate incredibly well with humans. Also, if you make the decision to hire trappers you will have to wait until trapping season begins in October. I hope you see that this plan is not good in the short term or the long term.

I urge you, as Mayor of Vaudreuil-Dorion, to consider other options before hiring trappers to deal with your fox issue.  Please use all of your political influence to ensure that the best, most well informed decision is made.

    Leave the foxes alone

  2. Trapping foxes is not cool! I felt bad for these creatures. Foxes are intellegent creatures. Some foxes are domesticated, for example: a Russian silver fox.
