Target: Russian President Vladimir Putin
Goal: End the Ukrainian conflict that caused a commercial airplane tragedy
The world watched in shock as news reports trickled in: A Malaysia Airlines flight en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur had been shot out of the sky as it flew over Ukrainian airspace. Vladimir Putin’s blasé attitude about the tragedy and the suspicious actions of pro-Russia rebels in the Ukraine have led many, including President Barack Obama, to believe that they are responsible. Do not allow the Russian government and its pro-war policies in the Ukraine escape scrutiny and blame for this atrocity. Urge President Putin to make reparations for this mistake and end violence in the Ukraine.
Malaysia Airlines fight MH17 was shot down while flying over the Ukraine, killing every single one of its 298 passengers. Although neither side in the months-long Ukrainian conflict has admitted to the attack, many in the West suspect it to be the work of pro-Russia separatists. The rebels have since blocked outside access to the crash site and are allegedly covering up all evidence of any connections with the Russian-supplied missile suspected to have taken down the plane.
Grieving countries are mounting pressure on Russia to put an end to the violence in the Ukraine, which they have supported and, in large part, instigated. Whether the tragedy was a targeted attack or a case of a mistaken aircraft identity, it should be a wake-up call to government leaders that conflict in the Ukraine has gone far enough. Since the beginning of the conflict earlier this year, over 800 civilians have been killed and 54,000 people displaced.
Urge the Russian government to stop hiding its tracks, end its support of the separatist insurgency, and work with both sides of the Ukrainian conflict to restore peace to the country.
Dear President Putin,
The death of 298 innocent Malaysia Airlines passengers signals the need for the conflict in the Ukraine to end immediately. Stop supplying the separatists with arms, such as the missile that was used to attack Flight MH17, and restore peace to the war-torn area.
In an interview following the crash, you were quick to lay all blame on the Ukraine saying, “There is no doubt that the nation over whose airspace this happened bears responsibility for the terrible tragedy.” You attempt to absolve Russia of all responsibility for the crash, and yet the plane was shot down in an area controlled by pro-Russia separatists to whom you have given arms and logistical support. Whether or not the attack was intentional, it’s time for Russia to take responsibility for its actions in the Ukraine, which ultimately led to this atrocity.
I urge you to de-escalate tensions in the Ukraine and work with both sides to ensure that similar tragedies do not take place again.
