Target: Rustom Kerawala, School Chairman
Goal: Demand justice for a six-year-old girl who was raped by two school staff members in India
Ever since the highly publicized gang rape and murder of a student on a Delhi bus in 2012, sexual violence has been highly scrutinized in India. Sadly, rape continues to be a serious problem in many parts of the country. A six-year-old girl was recently raped by both a security guard and a gym teacher at a school in Bangalore. However, there are multiple guards and gym teachers at the school, so the guilty parties have not yet been identified.
The rape was only uncovered after the girl complained of a stomach ache and was taken to a hospital. Local police have registered a case, but they have not yet made any arrests. Parents of students who attend the school have begun a boycott to ensure the safety of their children. Hundreds of parents gathered outside the school, refusing to let their children inside until this case is taken seriously and better school security is established.
One parent, Mayank Kumar, who sends both his daughters to the school, told BBC Hindi, “Right from the beginning, the school has been in a denial mode. First, when the police reached the school, they said, it was a case of theft. Then, we got to know about the incident from the newspapers that it was rape.”
School chairman, Rustom Kerawala, has offered a public apology for the incident and vowed to fully cooperate with police. Sign the below petition to demand justice for the six-year-old girl who was raped by school staff members and ensure that they are punished to the fullest extent of the law.
Dear Mr. Kerawala,
While the Indian government has introduced stricter anti-rape laws, sexual assault continues to be a major problem in portions of the country. Even though the death penalty is now a legal punishment for rape in India, the new laws are not deterring sexual predators and pedophiles well enough.
A six-year-old girl was recently raped by a security guard and a gym teacher at your school. Hundreds of parents have been gathering outside your school in protest because they do not feel it is a safe place to send their children. It is not acceptable to cover up this crime or to let the predators go unpunished.
I am urging you to work with local police to demand justice for your six-year-old student. Please keep the parents of students in your school informed about the investigation to restore their confidence in your school system.
